Hi All,
In response to requests, I have added a payment plan for the December
bootcamp, and I've added more information and FAQs to the website.
Please share with your disciplinary networks! I would love to get more
founding members who are unfamiliar with the interdisciplinary communities!
Q: Will this only work if I'm currently writing an article?
A: No, not at all! I originally designed this so you could better
understand where your scholarship fits in to different areas, but
organizing it around publication is a bit more concrete. This process will
also easily work for you if you are writing a grant application or any
other sort of proposal outside your home discipline. It’s also a great
first step even if you don’t know what you want to do with your research
yet, or if you just want to be able to speak convincingly with other
researchers. And of course, you have lifetime access so you can always come
back to it when you are ready to write something too.
Details here:

We start December 12th!

GEMs framework for complex systemic intersectional analysis is described by Ellen Lewis and Anne Stephens in https://i2insights.org/2022/11/29/approach-to-intersectionality/. Covers 3 broad fields conspicuous in most social challenges - Gender equality, Environments & Marginalised voices. Helps structure problems, evaluate complex situations & advocate for the rights of people, environmental systems & species. Encompasses & goes beyond intersectionality.

Improving cross-disciplinary teamwork with strategy knotworking & ecocycle planning is discussed by Nancy White in https://i2insights.org/2022/11/22/strategy-knotworking-and-ecocycle-plannin…. This is effective for looking back critically, assessing the current state & prospectively generating options to move forward. It also helps funders & grantees work in sync & supports shared optimization & exploration. Strategy knotworking has 6 questions: 1) What is the fundamental purpose of our work? 2) What is happening around us that demands change? 3) What are the critical uncertainties & paradoxes we must face to make progress? 4) Where are we starting, honestly? 5) Based on what we have discovered, what is now made possible? 6) What are our next steps & how will we know we are making progress?

Hi Folks,
The Institute for the Study of Scientometrics and Informetrics conference in July has extended the deadline for submission of papers. Please come to the website and consider submitting 1) a full paper; 2) work-in-progress; or 3) a doctoral workshop. Posters are encouraged, too. Please email me with any questions.

Tips for how to make online workshops productive, engaging, caring and fun are shared by the 20-member Care Operative in a revisited contribution at https://i2insights.org/2020/06/16/caring-online-workshops/. They include:
1) develop an agenda that allows everyone to maintain creative energy. Recreate breathing space, take breaks, move, build connections.
2) start with a check-in, use ice-breakers & energisers, make sure everyone gets a chance to speak; a facilitator helps.
3) use a structured decision making process to ensure conversations move forward & overcome difficulties reading body language.
4) create a 'virtual fridge' to avoid losing good ideas that there's no time to discuss
5) compile a shared to-do list.
6) acknowledge (don't hide) crying babies, pets & messy rooms
7) socialise at end of workshop.

Hi all,
I am excited to be running a brand new boot camp for interdisciplinary
researchers this winter. Please share widely
*Mute Reviewer 2*
In this 6 week program I'll take you through positioning your research for
an audience in a different discipline than your home.
In the future, this will become a 6-week course with recorded videos and
resources for larger groups, but since this is the first time I'll be
building it LIVE with you.
As a founding member, this means you will get:
- weekly live video lessons that will break down the process step by step
- live coaching with me to answer your questions directly
- individualized support with your disciplines and your research as
examples
- lifetime access to all updates and future versions of this boot camp
as it grows and evolves
- a HUGE founder discount! I expect this boot camp will be $2500
normally, but for just this first time I'm giving you $1000 off
Since it's the first time, I'm only taking 20 members.

How principled negotiation can resolve disagreements in research collaboration is described in https://i2insights.org/2022/11/15/principled-negotiation/. Also known as win-win negotiation, negotiation on merits and getting to yes. Four principles: 1) separate the people from the problem ie manage emotion, perception & communication separately from negotiation on substantive issue, 2) focus on interests not positions ie identify multiple interests underlying a position to see where real disagreements lie & focus on those, 3) generate a variety of possibilities before deciding what to do ie don't look for single answer, be creative in getting around constraints, 4) look for a fair solution, based on the merits ie use objective criteria to decide eg moral standards, equal treatment, costs, efficiency.

Three ways to improve interdisciplinarity are discussed by Romain Sauzet in his revisited i2Insights contribution at https://i2insights.org/2020/07/14/criticisms-of-interdisciplinarity/ (also in French). 1) Make it a secondary objective linked to a discipline; cannot work on its own if it is to connect to actual research, 2) Do not define it in unique homogeneous way; instead link to specific & contextual conditions to avoid being unrealistic, 3) Be more self-critical, less tolerant of activities that call themselves interdisciplinary but are not and more rigid in specifying what interdisciplinarity really is. Which criticisms of interdisciplinarity do you think are justified & should be responded to? How do you think interdisciplinarity can improve?
